Clicks without enquiries almost always trace back to one of six causes. Work through them in order.
If your ads are getting traffic and your phone isn't ringing, the money is leaking somewhere specific. In our experience it's nearly always one of the following — in roughly this order of frequency.
Broad match plus no negatives is how you end up paying for people searching for jobs, courses, DIY guides and salaries. Someone searching "how to fix a leaking tap" is not going to hire a plumber. Someone searching "emergency plumber Papamoa" is.
Fix: tighten match types, and build a real negative keyword list. Then check the search terms report — the actual queries you paid for. It's usually a horror show the first time.
You paid for a specific intent and dropped them on a generic homepage. Now they have to find what they came for, and most won't bother.
Fix: one page per intent. If the ad says emergency callout, the page's headline says emergency callout.
A page with five competing links and a phone number in the footer converts like a page with none. Every landing page needs one job.
Fix: one clear call to action, repeated. Phone number visible without scrolling, especially on mobile.
Every additional field costs you enquiries. You do not need their company size and how they heard about you before you'll speak to them.
Fix: name, phone, and one line about what they need. Get the rest on the call.
A stranger clicked an ad and landed on a page with no reviews, no proof, no real photos and no credentials. Why would they call?
Fix: real reviews, real photos, real case studies, real credentials. Not stock imagery and adjectives.
If a "conversion" is defined as a page view or a scroll, Google is optimising toward people who look at things and leave. It'll do that very efficiently.
Fix: a conversion is a phone call or a submitted form. Nothing else. Get tracking set up properly, then let the algorithm optimise toward something real.
Sometimes the ads are fine and the offer is the problem — you're more expensive, slower or less compelling than the competitor two results down, and no amount of bid management fixes that. A good agency will tell you. We'd rather have that conversation than take your money for twelve months.
